1885
Pocahontas Foods
It all began in 1885 when Pocahontas Foods was founded by James Capers, marking the inception of what would later become part of Performance Food Group (PFG). Pocahontas Foods played an instrumental role in laying the groundwork for future advancements in food distribution. As the years passed, other key players in the industry also emerged, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of what would become Performance Foodservice - Denver.
1892
New Prague Flouring
Mill Company
In 1892, the New Prague Flouring Mill Company was incorporated, later transforming into the International Multifoods Corporation, further cementing the industry’s early development. This was a period of rapid industrial growth, and foodservice distribution was no exception. These early companies were built on the vision of meeting a growing demand for quality food products, laying the foundation for what was to come.

Pocahontas Foods
It all began in 1885 when Pocahontas Foods was founded by James Capers, marking the inception of what would later become part of Performance Food Group (PFG). 1950
Leprino Foods
Fast forward to 1950, when Leprino Foods was established right here in Denver, Colorado, founded by James Leprino. Leprino Foods would later play a significant role in the local market, influencing the foodservice landscape in the region and contributing to Denver’s reputation as a hub for food distribution.
1955
Roma Distribution
Just five years later, in 1955, another milestone occurred with the establishment of Roma Distribution in Bradley Beach, New Jersey, by Louis Piancone. The inclusion of Roma would later become crucial to the expansion and service offerings of the Performance - Denver brand.
1957
Donsons Distribution Co.
As the industry continued to grow, Donsons Distribution Co. was founded in Denver in 1957, further establishing the city’s importance in foodservice operations. Denver was already becoming a key location for the food distribution industry by the mid-20th century, and these companies laid the groundwork for future expansions and innovations.
1970
Vendor Supply of America (VSA)
One of the most notable developments came in 1970, when Vendor Supply of America (VSA) was founded in Denver by Alan and Gerald Marcove. Specializing in providing vending customers with top-notch supplies throughout the U.S., VSA quickly became a significant player in the market. Their focus on vending was innovative at the time, and they saw steady growth throughout the decade.
1984
International Multifoods Distribution Group
By 1984, VSA’s success caught the attention of International Multifoods Distribution Group, who acquired the company. This acquisition marked a turning point for VSA, as it became integrated into a larger network of foodservice operations, increasing its reach and capacity.
1987
Performance Food Group (PFG)
Just three years later, in 1987, Pocahontas Foods underwent a major transformation, officially changing its name to become Performance Food Group (PFG). This rebranding symbolized a new era of growth and modernization for the company, aligning it more closely with the changing needs of the foodservice industry.
1994 - 1995
Strategic Acquisitions
PFG continued to expand through strategic acquisitions, such as the purchase of Leprino’s Restaurant Distribution Supply Division in 1994, followed by the acquisition of Pueringer Distribution in 1995. These acquisitions allowed PFG to broaden its portfolio, adding new capabilities and product offerings that would further enhance its ability to serve a diverse range of customers.
2002
Vistar Corporation
In 2002, Wellsprings Capital Management acquired Multifoods Distribution, appointing George Holms as CEO. This change in leadership led to another rebranding effort, with Multifoods Distribution Group becoming Vistar Corporation in the same year. Under this new name, the company continued to thrive, solidifying its position in the market as a leading foodservice distributor.
2005
Roma Denver
2005 was a landmark year for PFG as Vistar Corporation and Roma Foods merged, combining their strengths and expanding their reach across the nation. This merger was followed by Vistar’s acquisition of Donsons Distributing, which was then merged into Roma. This integration marked the establishment of Roma Denver, a key milestone for the region and a significant expansion of our operations.
2008
PFG, Vistar, Roma Merger
The following years saw continued growth and expansion. In 2008, private equity groups Blackstone and Wellspring, which owned Vistar, acquired Performance Food Group, merging it with Vistar and Roma Foods. This strategic merger not only enhanced PFG’s service capabilities but also solidified its reputation as a major player in the foodservice industry.
2009
Performance Foodservice
By 2009, PFG’s Broadline division was officially renamed Performance Foodservice, further strengthening the company’s brand by incorporating the expertise and offerings of Roma Foods into its broader service portfolio. This reorganization allowed Performance Foodservice - Denver to deliver more comprehensive solutions to its customers, ensuring they had access to a wider array of products and services.
2015
Public Listing
In 2015, Performance Food Group took a significant step forward, becoming a publicly traded company. This milestone reflected the company’s sustained growth, solid financial foundation, and commitment to innovation.
2023
PFG Joins the Fortune 500
Over the years, PFG has continued to evolve, and by 2023, it had achieved the remarkable distinction of being ranked as a Fortune 500 Global Company, standing at 272 globally and 84 domestically.
